Ian Robinson Sports Centre - Merchant Taylor's School

A new sports centre for Merchant Taylors' School in Liverpool.

Merchant Taylors' Schools is a prestigious boys’ school located in the suburban residential area of Crosby, Liverpool. The sensitively designed Ian Robinson Sports Centre was delivered in 2011, creating an attractive building set and state-of-the art facilities within the context and landscape of one of the city’s leading schools for boys.

The school’s existing listed buildings required the adoption of a heritage approach, combining the principle design aspirations to create a contemporary, welcoming sports centre for the entire portfolio of Merchant Taylor Schools, while paying tribute to the historical context of the school.

The new facility features a multi-sports hall for badminton, hockey, cricket, football, tennis, netball, basketball and trampolining, a separate indoor climbing wall and a fitness gym. A dance/drama studio, sports teaching classrooms, changing for indoor and outdoor sports, and other support facilities are also included within the development.

An environmental approach was adopted in the external architecture, with a broken roof line made up of a series of northlights, bringing natural light and ventilation to the main sports hall. We were engaged in the Cost Management and Procurement Management roles to successfully deliver the project.
