We were appointed to conduct a strategic viability study for Oldham Borough Metropolitan Council and identify an appropriate site for the redevelopment of Oldham Coliseum. Three potential sites were initially considered, with the preferred site at Greaves Street in the town centre. The site is located in between the old library building and the Town Hall, both of which are listed.
The project involves the demolition of the existing building on the site; a highly complex task in terms of constraints and logistics, before the construction of a 400-seater auditorium, followed by the refurbishment and extension of the two neighbouring listed buildings. The aspirations for the project seek to create a new cultural hub and an anchor project for Oldham. Oldham Coliseum is a net-zero-ambition design, featuring a cross-laminated timber frame, with carbon reduction measures proposed for the two existing buildings on either side.
