The award-winning restoration of the fire-damaged chapel at Tonbridge School.

Following a devastating fire in the mid-nineties, a decision was made to rebuild the School Chapel out of the ruins of the old. The entire roof, wall panelling, and the majority of fittings had been completely destroyed, and the remaining floor and walls were eventually dismantled to prevent complete collapse.

The client’s brief called for an increased seating capacity of 720, up from 450, but without breach of the original walls. In addition, the construction of a new Lady Chapel was required.

The fire damaged external building fabric required significant repair, restoration and re-instalment of walls, a new roof and slate coverings, window openings and new leaded and glazed lights.

Upon completion, the building became the recipient of numerous local and national, craftsmanship and detailing awards, including the RIBA National Award and Civic Trust Awards Outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment. It was also shortlisted for the Royal Fine Arts Commission of the Year.
